Ending Conversion Therapy Fraud

Every major medical and mental health organization in the country, including the American Psychological Association, American Medical Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics, has rejected conversion therapy as harmful and without therapeutic benefit. It doesn't change anyone's sexual orientation or gender identity. It increases the risk of depression, anxiety, and suicide in the young people subjected to it.

A recent Supreme Court ruling limited how states can ban conversion therapy in advance as a licensed practice, but it did not declare the practice safe or effective, and it left consumer fraud and medical malpractice claims fully intact.

As Senator, Lydia will:

  • Push the FTC to treat conversion therapy marketed as effective treatment as a deceptive trade practice, opening federal consumer protection enforcement against practitioners and organizations that make false claims
  • Support legislation extending the statute of limitations for conversion therapy survivors to bring civil claims, giving people harmed as children time to bring a case once they're adults
