Ending the Death Penalty
Lydia opposes the death penalty. The government should never hold the power to end a life it might be wrong about, and it has been wrong before.
Since 1973, at least 185 people sentenced to death have been exonerated. Nearly 70% of those cases involved official misconduct by police, prosecutors, or other government officials. An execution can't be appealed or corrected afterward.
It's also not cheaper. California has spent over $4 billion more on the death penalty since 1978 than it would have on life sentences.
Lydia supports ending the federal death penalty and encourages states to do the same. Life without parole keeps dangerous people off the streets without the risk of an irreversible mistake.
