Michigan's Water and Power Bills Aren't For Sale
Applies to large-scale facilities (20+ megawatts), not small business, and not just new projects. Existing Michigan data centers get five years to comply or lose their permits; any expansion triggers full compliance immediately.
- A hard water limit, not a mandated method. Every data center gets a water-use cap tied to its size, and it's up to the company how they hit it. Michigan's cold climate makes dry, water-free cooling viable nearly year-round, so most companies will get there on their own, but the law sets the limit, not the technology.
- No PFAS, no toxic waste dumped on whoever can't fight back. No "forever chemical" coolants, and no shipping e-waste or hazardous material to countries too poor to say no, the same standard the rest of the industrialized world already follows.
- Build your own clean power. Every data center funds new renewable generation to match its own load, not paper credits, not squeezed from power residents already depend on.
- Local control stays local. No township's zoning vote gets overridden by Lansing or Washington.
- No corporate tax giveaways. Michigan doesn't bribe a company to build something it already wanted to build.
- No NDAs. Full public hearings. If it's good for Michigan, it can be explained to Michigan in public.
- Real limits on noise, light, and air pollution, and some places, like Michigan's dark sky preserves, are off the table entirely.
- Every worker fully covered by OSHA. No safety carve-outs because a project is high-profile.
- Jobs with teeth, not promises. A community-negotiated bond, forfeited if hiring targets are missed. Michigan workers get first right of refusal, plus a tech-skills pipeline through community colleges.
- A cleanup bond for when it closes, so an abandoned data center doesn't become Michigan's next blighted building.
- Fiber Optic for All. Any fiber line built to serve a data center has to make broadband available to the rural communities along its route, fully voluntary, no forced easements.
- Your data is your property. No government access without a warrant. No corporate use, including AI training, without your consent. No autonomous weapon or military AI installation makes a lethal decision without a human being who answers for it, and no federal agency can pressure a company to remove that safeguard.
- Net neutrality, restored in law. No internet fast lanes for corporate data centers at the expense of everyone else.
