Restoring Congress's War Power

The Constitution gives the power to declare war to Congress alone, not the President. That power hasn't been taken away. Congress has simply stopped using it, choosing symbolic resolutions with no legal force instead of the binding tools already available to it, or letting deadlines pass without a vote at all.

As Senator, Lydia will:

  • Vote for binding joint resolutions to end unauthorized hostilities, not symbolic concurrent resolutions that carry no legal weight
  • Oppose treating any Authorization for Use of Military Force as a permanent, standing justification for conflicts it was never written to cover
  • Advocate on the floor for senators of both parties to come together and reclaim Congress's constitutional responsibility over war, regardless of which president currently holds power

Policies on this page are living documents. Lydia updates them as research, legislation, and community input evolve. If something here should be sharper, more accurate, or missing entirely, tell her campaign.
